Participant Information Statement for Children

Who’s doing this research?

My name is Lauren, and I am from Flinders University. I have two supervisors who give me advice on my research. Their names are Grace and Phillip, but you won’t meet them. They are from Flinders University too.

Why is it being done?

I want to find out how you’re going after you experiences the bushfire or wildfire.

What good will it do?

This research might not change anything for you, but it will help me to know how to help other children in the future who go through a bushfire or a wildfire like you have.

What would I have to do to be part of it?

You would sit with me, Lauren, and talk about the time since the bushfires. Your voice will be recorded so I don’t forget anything. It would take about 30-45 minutes. A parent or adult you trust will be close by during the interview.

What are some risks to me?

Talking about the time since the bushfire or wildfire might make you feel upset or anxious. You can skip questions if you don’t want to answer them, and you can choose to stop the interview at any time.

What if I say yes, then change my mind?

If you change your mind before the interview, you can tell an adult and they will contact me to let me know – no problems! If we have started talking and you change your mind, just let me know and we will be done.

Who will know what I say?

Only you and I will know what you say. After the interview, I will write down what you said but instead of your name I will use a secret code. Then the recording will be deleted.

Where will you keep what I say?

Your words, with a secret code instead of your name, will be kept on a password protected computer that only I will have access to.

Can I know more about what you find out?

Sure! When the research is finished there will be an update here on the project’s website.

Is this legit?

It is. Flinders University have a special group (called the Human Research Ethics Committee) that approve all research, and they have approved this. When research is approved, they also give it a project number, this is project 5627.

What if I’ve got questions?

Your parent or legal guardian have more detailed information about this project that they can share with you. If they don’t know the answer they can email me and I can answer your questions then.

What now?

If you don’t want to be part of this research all you need to do is let your parent or legal guardian know that you don’t want to do the interview.

If you do want to take part in this research, and if your parent or legal guardian say that it’s OK, they will let me know, and we will arrange a time to speak with you.
